Ceramic Tile Removal at Home
Have you ever had to do ceramic tile removal when working on home projects? One of the hardest things to do when upgrading rooms is the tile removal. I often renovate old homes and buildings, and consistently the tile removal is one of the most frustrating parts of each job. If you are thinking about doing it at home, should you? Perhaps you should pay someone or call someone to tell you how to properly do the removal, or just have them do all the work. This is a question often asked, but you do have options.
Removal Problems
One of the worst problems with ceramic tile removal is that there are few easy ways to do it. Ceramic tiles can be installed in many different ways and with many different methods. This can lead to a removal process that takes far longer than you think it should have. There are many different types of glue and mortar that may have been used for the particular type of tile you are trying to remove. For the most part the tile should pop up when the proper tool is used, but some installations use too much glue and they break apart when you try to pry them up or some just refuse to come up at all and you are basically chiseling the entire floor a bit at a time. This is a nightmare scenario and can add hours, days, or even weeks to what should have been a simple project.
Removal Ideas
One consideration you may want to try is to first try removing some of the tiles yourself. If you get into the project for a bit and none of the tiles are coming up clean, then you might want to reconsider and hire someone to come in and do it. There are also various tile removal tools available that you can buy which you may have more luck with. Browse around on the internet to get a good feel for what is out there. Bring some of the tiles and mortar chunks to your local home improvement center and see if they have any ideas.
Baby Steps
If you are doing a large ceramic tile removal job and are having problems, there are some ideas to help make it easier on you. One of the best ways to make it easier on you is to break the tile removal sessions up into smaller sessions. Instead of toiling away at the same task over and over for a week, break up your tile removing into 30 minute chunks and work on other parts of your project in the meantime. Enlist the help of your spouse, friends, or family to help you do a bit of the tile removal work. Ceramic tile removal is often not easy work, but take it slow and steady and you can get it done yourself.
