First Time Trip to Egypt
Egypt is one of the most interesting and unique countries in the world. Rich in culture and one of the greatest civilizations of ancient times, Egypt has some very unique sites and there are many archeological treasures that look almost unreal. Eqypt is largely a desert country, with the large Nile river basin running through the length of the middle. If your planning on a first time trip to Egypt, your in for a real treat.
Hows The Weather?
Eqypt is a very hot country. American and European tourists are well advised to always wear sunblock and consider sunglasses and a hat as well. The summer months are particularly hot and if you have problems with the heat, its definately best to visit in the winter months. Be sure to drink water regularly, bottled water is best and safest when travelling to Egypt or any foreign country.
Getting Around
Egypt has multiple airports, the largest being at Cairo, but also at Luxor and Aswan. Renting a car while you are in Egypt is inexpensive, but the driver needs to be at least 25 years of age. Taxis are an excellent and cheap way of getting around the urban areas.
Western Influence
The tourist industy in Egypt is huge. Dont be suprised to see malls, McDonalds, and other western icons scattered about. The local cuisine and the local experience are still all over the place of course, and I recommend trying some of it if you want to get a realistic feel for this country. Top class accomodations and hotels are available, and I would recommend staying at a good western style hotel. Alcohol in Egypt is officially not allowed, but in the hotels and western areas, the rules are completely ignored.
There are thousands of wonderful sights to see in Egypt and most people who visit want to return. Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, has interesting architecture in its downtown and an historic Islamic district containing beautiful mosques. The city is also the gateway to the iconic great Giza pyramids, the only surviving one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. Lots more ancient history is on view at Luxor where the valley of the kings receives many tourists each year. The museums in Cairo are some of the best in the world.
The northern coast of Egypt is one of the best areas. Wonderful beaches, and sunken ruins make for an interesting and enjoyable time. Although many people complain how commercialized and dirty Egypt is, take the time to look beyond it. If you are planning a first time trip to Egypt, you are going to have a fantastic time and there are sights to see that you cant see anywhere else in the world.
